October 24, 2012, was the second annual Food Day, and at Lawrence School – a public K-8 school in Brookline, Massachusetts – the parent group Stone Soup celebrated by embracing the “Eat Real” theme and showcasing real food at an all-school Festival: from school & backyard gardening to sampling fresh fruits and vegetables, unfamiliar toppings, locally baked bread, and make-your-own-granola; from peer-judging a recipe contest, swapping cook books and giving away kids cooking magazines, to raffling off pumpkins, breads, food baskets, organic produce boxes and reusable lunch containers.
We made apple and sage lemonade & decorated tile trivets, learned about hidden sugars, and how to give nutrition boosts to homemade and restaurant meals. The Food in Film booth drew in parents while kids played food bingo, twister, and sensory games with grains. Warm apple sauce and sweet potato pudding were the big winners of the recipe contest, and were joined by roasted cauliflower and kale chips as new additions to the cafeteria menu. The Festival was such a hit, it has become an annual event.
We did it again on Food Day 2013!
